"Gourds in Love"

"Gourds in Love"
This colorful work of art is a tribute to love in the past, the future and the after life. Embraced, the couple symbolizes endless joy, humor and harmony.
In actuality, this sculpture is a reverse tree of life. Love and life being the key elements as two gourds are entangled in a passionate embrace. They are decorated with a tree of life full of flowers, fruits and birds.

This gourd was inspired by Mexican trees of life. Mexican trees of life are an expression of art, soul, spiritual heritage and individuality. Traditional trees of life are ceramic trees decorated with berries, birds and flowers. Usually traditional trees of life have small figurines of Adam and Eve. This sculpture is a most exceptional and unique example because it focuses, not on the tree, but on the element of human life and love.

This is a very powerful and magical sculpture. From different angles it appears to tell different stories of love and passion. Sometimes, I think he is kissing her and other times I think she is definitely kissing him. Some have considered this piece quite sexual. Various times people have smiled and asked if this is a “pornographic gourd”. It was not my intention, but I am happy that this piece has the ability to make people smile and entertain such thoughts. I do enjoy reminding people about a time when they felt such a passion. This whimsical art sculpture is made of natural, dried gourds which were sculpted with paper and acrylic paint. The finished gourd is sealed and signed. Smaller accessories on the gourd, like the flowers include various materials (such as clay, paper and glue).
